Was 1976 a good year in Champagne?

A sunny, hot drought year with record European heat. Early flowering led to a very early harvest opening on 1 September, yielding a large 10,359 kg/ha of super-ripe fruit.

The hot vintage notwithstanding, the 1976 Cristal comes across as remarkably lifted and light on its feet, with a gorgeous sense of translucence to play off the rich, deep fruit. Fully mature but also with enough freshness and energy to drink well for a number of years, the 1976 has it all. Wild flowers, mint, honey sage and orange peel are some of the many notes that shape the wine. Although splitting hairs at this level, for my taste, the 1976 is a bit heavy and ripe. There is no mystery. The 1976 gives up all of its (considerable) charms easily. That is not a bad thing, but I find a bit more elegance and nuance in some of the other vintages in this tasting. One of the most celebrated Champagne vintages of the 1970s, 1976 is remembered for very hot conditions that resulted in short growing season and a very early harvest.

The 1976 Cristal offered an additional level of ripeness and sweetness and depth, with notes of candied apricots and figs.

The Cristal, on the other hand, was ready to go, still closer to infancy than maturity but very bready, toasty and nutty. Long and fat, the Cristal was incredibly toasty

Very mature oxidized notes with ripe flavors of orange/apricot and a lovely sweetness and depth. Plenty of mousse and acidity left here. A really satisfying aged Champagne.

Light oxidation on the nose, but holding together well. Sweet apple and apricot palate. Moderate complexity but this is showing well for its age with life still left.

Golden creaminess. A younger bottle than the '82 or '79 and had not yet developed its full character.

World's Greatest - Night II (Daniel): Interestingly the nose on the '76 is the freshest of the flight ('82, '79, '76) and has flowers and white peach in addition to the developed caramel tones. Fresh nectarine and mandarin on the palate. Bright and juicy. Curiously this is showing younger than both '82 and '79. This is the wine I would want to buy out of all of these, if this is indicative, but this is likely a great bottle. Big mouthful of juicy white peach. Mmm.
